The NYC Drag March, now in its 29th year, opened Pride weekend in style. The annual march drew participants of all backgrounds, from leather-clad marchers to the usual faces of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
Starting at Tompkins Square Park and concluding at the Stonewall Inn, the Drag March held particular significance this year in light of the widespread attacks on drag story hour and drag performances in general. In one of the most recent signs of the legal wrangling surrounding the drag scene across the country, a federal judge ordered a City Council in a small Utah city to issue a permit for a drag performance over the objections of city lawmakers.
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, meanwhile, enjoyed a friendly environment after a national backlash stemming from a controversy over Dodgers Pride night.
