Anderson Cooper is an interesting personality in that he is very attractive, but not in a usual, “All American boy” way (“The Night Anderson Cooper Kissed Me,” by Paul Schindler, Jul. 4-17). It’s like he was born silver haired; he makes no bones about being older and he has a quietness to him that is adorable. He has made a career out of being more sensitive certainly that the usual uber-hyped TV-tron.
I was lucky enough to meet him at a marvelous event several years ago, a SAGE memorial service for SAGE members who'd died during the course of the year. Cooper was the emcee. One of the members was a florist whom his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, used often. The three of them had become friends. During the service, Cooper admitted that he was actually uncomfortable being off-script, although I think he's gotten over that. He came off as shy, sweet, and very natural.
I'm glad that he has come out, and hope that his audience is grown up enough to deal with it.

So, who is left to come out, and do we really want them to? Ed Koch? John Travolta? Kevin Spacey? Pope Benedict XVI? Jodie Foster — who went back in after a flirtation of acknowledging her now former partner? At this point, I don't think we want any of these people. I just hope people will be out from the get-go in their careers, and it will eventually be no big deal. We still have a long way to go in team sports and among movie actors, but that is starting to change, too.
